Harris Burdick's Top 5 Washington Geography Sites

Site What it is and how to use it.
1. +++      Kid's Ferry Page Ferries are cool. Believe it or not, especially on the eastern side of Washington, many students have NEVER even been on a ferry.  The kids page (geared toward elementary ages) is excellent.
Have students create reports on where ferries go in Washington and how they are run. Plenty of information is available at this site as well as games and more.
2. +++   The Lighthouses of WA This is a fantastic site, full of gorgeous pictures and a wealth of historical information about lighthouses in Washington as well as Oregon and California.
Have students list all the lighthouses in Washington state, then find and plot them on the map using a Washington state road map and the help of a Washington state gazetteer. A gazetteer is a must!
3. +++   History Link of WA Although it's only the history of Seattle and King County, this site is excellent. Full of great information about Seattle and King County and very useable.
Have students track the history for two weeks and compare the data and events with what has gone on today. What are the similarities and differences, and what impact does that specific history have on Washington today?
4. +++   WA Trail Association An excellent site for hikers...and educators! This site has comprehensive information about just about anything related to hiking in Washington. And the photo galleries...
Have students access the monthly photo galleries and pick three photos they like. Have then explain why they like them, and then find and plot them on the Washington state map you have pinned up in your room! :)
5. +++   The Whitman Mission A terrific site hosted by the National Park Service. The online site gives you a great overview, but the gem is the student resources
Have students access the student resources pages to find historical information about the who, what, where and WHY of the Whitman Mission.
